The Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Program provides free, limited-scope legal services to pro se (self-represented) litigants with cases in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut who cannot afford to hire an attorney.  While there is no automatic right to counsel in civil cases, the Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Program can assist litigants by providing services such as:

Brief legal counseling
Advising litigants about potential federal claims prior to filing suit
Interpreting and explaining federal law and procedure

Reviewing draft pleadings and correspondence with the Court

The Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Program operates at the office of New Haven Legal Assistance Association at 205 Orange St., New Haven, CT.  We are a very short distance from the New Haven federal district courthouse.  We assist pro se plaintiffs and defendants on a variety of federal legal issues including civil rights, employment discrimination, and disability discrimination.  We assist individuals with cases in federal district court in New Haven, Hartford, and Bridgeport.  We are not able to assist incarcerated individuals at this time.

The Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Program is led by Attorney Cat Itaya.

Alternatively, call 203-850-7720 and leave a message.  We will get back to you, but please note this method of intake will take longer.
