Housing Attorney

NHLAA is seeking to hire an attorney to join its busy housing unit. Candidates should demonstrate a passion for public interest law and social justice and want to work closely with communities burdened by systemic socioeconomic barriers to prevent eviction and homelessness. The attorney will be expected to thoughtfully work with our NHLAA team, clients, and community groups to resolve individual issues, as well as systemic issues related to the eviction process. The attorneys will primarily represent clients in summary process eviction cases, as well as administrative proceedings involving federal rent subsidies including court and administrative hearings, engage in negotiated settlements, and work with local social service providers that may support the client.

In addition to representing tenants in eviction proceedings in court and administrative proceedings, the work presents opportunities to work closely with community organizations, to change the culture of the courts as part of a growing cohort that will transform landlord-tenant relations over the coming years.

Office Manager

NHLAA seeks an Office Manager to ensure the smooth functioning of our administrative operations. The Office Manager will assist the Executive Director with administrative matters related to the Board and fundraising, supervise administrative staff, and oversee office maintenance.

Human Resources Manager

NHLAA seeks a Human Resources Manager to work with the Executive Director to support LAA’s workplace culture that is welcoming, energizing, and empowering to employees of all identities, communities, and experiences. The HR Manager will be responsible for the day to day HR functions of NHLAA, including encouraging staff participation in professional development, coordinating hiring and onboarding of new staff, maintaining strong internal communications across the organization, compliance with state and federal employment laws, maintaining personnel files and the employee handbook, working with NHLAA’s unions, and coordinating staff events.

Pro Bono and Outreach Coordinator

The Pro Bono and Outreach Coordinator will work collaboratively with legal aid providers, private attorneys, and local community-based organizations to connect private attorneys to those in need of legal representation in immigration proceedings. The Coordinator will also facilitate Know Your Rights and community outreach initiatives by working with community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and others to provide legal education to the immigrant and broader community.

Approximately 250,000 non-citizens residing in Connecticut are at risk of deportation, many for no other reason than their status as non-citizens, even though they may have valid applications for lawful resident status pending – whether they are victims of trafficking, domestic violence survivors, people seeking asylum, or minors brought here by their parents. The vast majority of people facing deportation do not have an attorney, as there is no right to counsel in immigration proceedings, even though these clients face the loss of the basic human needs of safety and income security.

Summer Law Student Internships

NHLAA accepts applications for summer law student internships. Responsibilities typically include: interviewing clients, providing legal advice through oral and written communication, conducting outreach or know-your-rights programs, researching and drafting legal memos and court pleadings, and supporting attorneys with pending litigation and other advocacy projects. Law student interns (including rising 2Ls) may also have the opportunity to argue motions in court, participate in trials, or represent clients at administrative hearings. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred, but not required. Other foreign language abilities are welcome. NHLAA typically invites a group of three to six law students for internships each summer. Applicants expressing interest in summer law student internships only should contact Attorney Ellen Messali (emessali@nhlegal.org) and Cassandra Saxton (csaxton@nhlegal.org).

School-Year Law Student Internships:

We also accept applications for school-year internships. Although we do not have funds to pay interns, we are happy to sponsor students under all work study and public interest fellowship programs. Law student interns at NHLAA will work under the supervision of experienced attorneys. We cannot offer internships to 1L students. Applicants interested in an internship with NHLAA should send a resume and letter of interest to Deputy Director Elizabeth Rosenthal (erosenthal@nhlegal.org).

If you are a current law students or recent law school graduate and are interested in working at NHLAA as a legal fellow, please contact Elizabeth Rosenthal (erosenthal@nhlegal.org) or Alexis Smith (asmith@nhlegal.org)
